Stephen Husarik recently gave a piano performance-recital in which he revealed the results of his research into Beethoven’s last piano sonata, Opus 111. It took many years and visits to a number of archives and museums in Europe to complete this project–which is now under consideration for publication in a music journal. The Rockefeller Institute got wind of this project and wrote up a very nice article that might interest readers of the Newsletter. It explains some of the obstacles Husarik had to overcome to examine pertinent sources and, most of all, be able to play on Beethoven’s piano.
Erin McCoy presented a paper, “Always Past, Always Present: Rewrtiting the Impractical Past of US Anti-Refugee Sentiment,” at the 2nd International Theory of History Conference in Ouro Preto, Brazil in August. The paper began as a parallel between Vietnam War refugee rhetoric and today’s anti-Muslim refugee rhetoric but derailed into a tirade against the US GOP Presidential Candidates, but the audience seemed to enjoy it. In case you were wondering, Ouro Preto is amazing and Erin is Zika-free.
